What is meningitis?

Before we go on to answer the question, there's something you need to know about the brain.

There's a layer of tissue that covers the brain and spinal cord in a normal healthy human. This tissue layer is called the meninges and serves to protect the brain and spinal cord from harm. When this tissue layer becomes inflammed, the illness that results is called meningitis.

Meningitis is a severe illness which can be fatal if not diagnosed early and treated properly. Some forms of meningitis are communicable (i.e. transmitted from one person to another) while some are non-communicable (i.e. cannot be transmitted from one person to another).

Meningitis is commonly caused by infections with viruses, bacteria or fungi. Other less common causes of meningitis include heavy metal toxins and reaction to certain medications.

Meningitis affects teens and young adults more frequently than it affects older adults. However, there are certain forms of meningitis that are common in particular age groups. e.g.
